Saqqara step pyramid approach
Saqqara is where pyramid logic first climbed — six mastaba layers becoming height. Children understand "stairs to sky" faster than smooth Giza slopes.
The necropolis plain is open and exposed. Morning passage only in warm months. Hats non-negotiable. One monument focused well beats a necropolis marathon.
First sighting
Stop at distance before approaching base. Let scale register — compare to apartment blocks they know. Walk closer slowly; desert silence is part of the lesson.
Tomb entries
Some interior tombs reward older children with painted reliefs. Confined stairs and low light unsettle younger kids — preview photos outside first. Adults split if needed.
Sit in shade of mastaba walls between walks. Water every twenty minutes. Sand in shoes is normal — brush at car, do not fight mid-visit.
Why Saqqara before Giza
Smaller crowds, stranger shapes, story of architectural experiment. Giza afterward feels like culmination, not introduction.
